Special Licence for Physicians Who Do Not Meet Normal Requirements
(Special Licence is not currently available in Whitehorse)

The Medical Profession Act provides a method for licensing doctors to practice medicine in the Yukon that do not meet all the established criteria through a special licence. The person must be offered a position in the Yukon subject to obtaining a special licence.  The Minister for Health and Social Services must first determine that there is a demonstrated need in an area before a special license can be issued.

A special licence is valid for a period of not less than three months and not more than 5 years and may not be renewed or extended.

The person who qualifies for a special licence must:

  1. Be a graduate of a school of medicine listed in the Directory of the World Health Organization;
  2. Pass the Evaluation Examination of the Medical Council of Canada and hold a valid letter from the Medical Council of Canada to that effect; and
  3. Have completed at least one year of postgraduate training satisfactory to the Council.
