Medical Profession Licensing Requirements in Yukon
All physicians wishing to practice medicine in Yukon must have the following:
- licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada
- hold a certificate of fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the Canadian College of Family Physicians
OR
- hold a current full licence in another Province or Territory of Canada that is a party to the Agreement on Internal Trade.

Limited (Family Practice/Specialist) Licence for Physicians
Who Do Not Meet Normal Requirements
(A "Limited (Family Practice/Specialist) Licence" is currently not available in Yukon.)
The Medical Profession Act provides a method for licensing doctors to practice medicine in the Yukon that do not meet all the established criteria through a Limited (Family Practice/Specialist) licence. The person must be offered a position in the Yukon subject to obtaining a Limited (Family Practice/Specialist) licence. The Minister for Health and Social Services must first determine that there is a demonstrated need in an area before a Limited (Family Practice/Specialist) licence can be issued.
A Limited (Family Practice/Specialist) licence is valid for a period of not less than three months and not more than 5 years and may not be renewed or extended.
The person who qualifies for a Limited (Family Practice/Specialist) licence must:
- Be a graduate of a school of medicine listed in the Directory of the World Health Organization;
- Pass the Evaluation Examination of the Medical Council of Canada and hold a valid letter from the Medical Council of Canada to that effect; and
- Have completed at least one year of postgraduate training satisfactory to the Council.
